Over time, they faced resistance, but many were eventually converted and remained faithful to this day. But soon, they all found themselves absorbed in the common goal of reaching out to the boarders and the school to share the Gospel. Initially, it was an uneasy marriage, out of convenience, of a few cell groups and bible study groups that came together to start a revival. By God’s Providence, students from different churches, cell groups, CCAs and classes became boarders in the ACSI Boarding School. Read more: Ī series of events happened in 19, leading up to the Boarding School revival. Notably, the clocktower revival was made up of many small groups that operated on the staircase of the clock tower and in the classrooms. BB cell groups had bible study and prayer groups on weekdays. The groups were generally class-based or level-based, and operated within the campus, outside campus and in their homes. Others were formed as discipleship groups by para-church organizations like the Navigators. Some small groups were started by churches, including Faith Community Baptist Church, Trinity Christian Centre, City Harvest Church and Barker Road Methodist Church. Some were perennial, while others were seasonal (such as during examination periods). Small groups dotted the history of the ACS/ACSI Christian movement, through various forms of Bible study, fellowship or other cell groups. They stood up against heretic doctrines and shady interpretations of the Bible. The “aggressive” approach to Bible studies and overseas missions produced many generations of student leaders which led to the birth of FireAC, ACnow, LoveAC, and Boarding School Revival. From 1992-2012, over 30 trips were organised and two officers eventually received the Lord’s calling to serve in Thailand. ![]() One significant ministry undertaken the overseas missions to Khon Kaen, Thailand. Starting as a small group that held regular meetings in a little room behind the school library, the Christian Fellowship (CF) grew in size and reputation as a place of sharing, worship and Bible study. The Christian Fellowship (CF) and Boys’ Brigade (BB) produced countless of generation Christians who eventually became leaders of their respective churches. The Christian Fellowship and Boys’ Brigade A headline in the Straits Times on 7 November 1972 reads “Students go into trance at prayer: Some end religious sessions in hysterics”. The clocktower revival spread to other schools like Swiss Cottage, MGS, SJI, etc. It was very much a Spirit-led movement against the odds, it grew into a revival. As the meetings were Charismatic in nature, the students didn’t receive much support from the Methodist Church and school administration, and they were subsequently barred from meeting in the clock tower. A lot of prayer meetings were held in the clock tower by students from these groups. With humble beginnings, it started from a Saint John’s Ambulance Brigade (SJAB) Camp and slowly spread to the Pre-U 1 and 2 cohorts. The Clock Tower Revival was a prominent student-led Christian movement in Singapore. Pre-ACSI Days – Clocktower Revival 1972-73 We hope the lessons learnt from the past can encourage and spur future generations to continue fanning the flame of Jesus in ACSI and beyond.
